nest is the startup incubator exclusively for students and graduates of the University of Portsmouth. We are here to help you get an idea off the ground, or take an existing startup to the next level.

We offer expert advice and support, workshops, co-working space, networking opportunities and a whole host of useful resources.

Our co-working space is free for students and graduates are eligible for a reduced rate.

No need to book, drop in any time between 10am-4pm, see the space and find out how we can support you.

Dynamo Challenge

A one day inter-university Dynamo Challenge, where as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week you will be working  with students from 4 other universities on a live brief and asked to come up and feedback your ideas.

There is something for everyone, no matter whether you are business orientated, creative, a team player, a team leader – we need you all!

The day is a lot of fun and there are prizes to win!

Places are limited, so register your interest today.

We will select 15 students from each university and let you know if you have been successful by Friday 26th October.

Entrepreneurs’ Lounge – How to create an incredible startup!

So what does it take to create an incredible startup? Surely that is the million dollar question.

Through his experiences Chris Howard, successful entrepreneur has lived first hand through the ups and downs of starting his own businesses. Having also co-founded and develop a number of startup accelerators and now running his new venture The Rattle, Chris will talk you through his experiences.

By going against the grain and finding his own way of doing things, Chris has a unique approach to what it takes to be a remarkable startup that has longevity and how to set yourself apart from everyone else.

Come and hear Chris’s top tips on how you can create & develop your own incredible startup and ask your questions.

The session will take the form of two parts: a short session led by our expert entrepreneur, followed by the chance to ask any questions you have specific to your startup and what you want to find out.

Do you need to consider protecting your startup idea? ​

​Come and speak to the experts from Maucher Jenkins​ who will be running a free clinic to help you establish any intellectual property issues you will need to consider such as copyright​, patents and trademarks.

​What is intellectual property?

Having the right type of intellectual property protection helps you to stop people stealing or copying:

*the names of your products or brands

*your inventions

*the design or look of your products

*things you write, make or produce

Copyright, patents and trademarks are all types of intellectual property protection. You get some types of protection automatically, others you have to apply for.

If you have any questions come and speak to the experts from Mauchers Jenkins.

You will need to book a slot using the appointment section on My Career and provide a brief summary of your idea before the day of the meeting.

Please note: You must be in the process of developing an idea and have engaged with the nest team.

Please come prepared to explain your idea and take notes during the meeting.

Social Startup – Idea generation workshop

This event is open to students, graduates and members of the public.

Are you interested in tackling social problems, improving communities, helping to improve people’s lives or the environment? If so, why not join our Social Startup programme.

The Social Startup programme is a series of workshops designed to take an idea, develop it and launch a social enterprise. Social Startup aims to inspire you and support you through a range of practical tools, resources, mentoring and networking activities.

This Idea Generation workshop is aimed at anyone who would like to make a social impact but don’t currently have an idea.

Using a range of tools we will help you explore potential social startup opportunities that you may wish to develop.

If following this workshop you are interested in developing the idea further we run a 5 week Social Startup programme to help you look at how your thoughts can be put into action.

You can develop an idea by yourself or as a team. By developing your social idea you will be on the journey to launching your own social startup. For more information visit our Social Startup page.

The Social Startup programme is a series of workshops designed to take an idea, develop it and launch a social enterprise. Social Startup aims to inspire you and support you through a range of practical tools, resources, mentoring and networking activities.

The Social Startup programme workshops are aimed at anyone who has a social idea that they would like to develop.

Using a range of tools we will help you explore your idea further and take you through the stages of developing it into a sustainable project/startup.

You can develop an idea by yourself or as a team. By developing your social idea you will be on the journey to launching your own social startup.

The workshops will provide you with practical tools and specific Social Startup resources designed to help you develop your idea and support is on hand throughout and after the programme.

Are you looking for ways in which to raise funds for your startup?

How about crowdfunding – where your aim is to get a large group of people to pay a small amount of money to invest in your idea. Well known examples of crowdfunding platforms include Kickstarter Crowdcube, Crowdfunder and there are many more.

In order to have a successful crowdfunding campaign, it’s not quite as simple as just asking people to invest their money. Come and find out about why you may want to consider crowdfunding and how to put together the best campaign together for maximum impact.

Self-Employment Placement Information Drop-in

A Self-Employment Placement (SEP) may be undertaken by certain students currently studying at the University of Portsmouth. This will normally take place following the 2nd year of studies and where appropriate replaces the traditional placement year in industry.

The aim of the SEP is to encourage the development of enterprise skills whilst starting-up and running a business or social enterprise or being self-employed during the placement year.

If you would like to find out more about undertaking a Self-Employment Placement, drop in between 2pm-4pm and chat to a member of the team.

No need to book a place, just come in during these times.

Thinkthrough is the first workshop in the RouteToStartup series for those students & graduates who have attended a nest Enterprise Clinic.

This workshop is designed to:
* Test your ideas
* Explore the myths & realities of startup
* Identify models & approaches
* Understand your values & ambition

This is an interactive workshop working with other like-minded students & graduates.

In preparation for the workshop you will need to:
* Think about why you want to work for yourself
* Have a business idea you want to develop
* Bring a notepad/pen or laptop to record ideas, notes and develop plans

This event is open to UoP students and graduate (up to 5 years).

This workshop is designed to help you explore:
* Costing & pricing
* Revenue streams
* Cashflow

This is an interactive workshop working with other like-minded students & graduates.

In preparation for the workshop you will need to: 
* Complete any tasks following the Developstation 1 & 2 workshop
* Bring all completed worksheets and notes from previousRouteToStartup workshops
* Bring a notepad/pen or laptop to record ideas, notes and develop plans


This event is open to UoP students and graduate (up to 5 years).
